Functional Training

Your lifestyle and your fitness goals are unique to you. We feel that you deserve a completely custom training and wellness program designed specifically to help you function at your peak. Beware of a workout full of pre-designed, cookie-cutter weightlifting exercises that a trainer forces you to do. You should not have to mold yourself around weight-lifting exercises; rather, the exercises you do should be molded around YOU functioning at the highest level possible during YOUR daily life and YOUR physical activity of choice. Gone are the days where you should be expected to grunt and sweat doing the same exercises as everyone else. You will get better results if your training program is designed around your unique lifestyle, goals and comfort level.

What Is Functional Training?

By definition, functional training promotes adaptation of the body consistent with its intended movement or activity. We feel that functional training will lead to better muscular balance and joint stability, as well as decreasing the number of injuries sustained in an individual’s performance in a sport or their every day lives. This is why we rely so heavily on this functional training approach to help our clients reach their fitness goals or get  healthy after an injury.

Because we feel responsible for helping our clients achieve superior results, we rely on the functional training approach because it is a form of training that emphasizes the body’s natural ability to move in all six degrees of freedom. In comparison, though machines may appear to be safer, they restrict and isolate movements to a single plane of motion.  These movements are unnatural forms of movement for the body and potentially could lead to improper wear on joints, bones, ligaments and muscles; ultimately leading to a degradation in performance and injury.

Functional Training vs. Fixed Weight Training

Recent comparative research on ‘functional training’ vs. ‘fixed variable training’ techniques was published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research in 2009. The Results of the study showed very substantial gains and benefits in the functional training group over fixed training equipment. Functional users had a 58% greater increase in strength over the fixed-form group. Their improvements in balance were 196% higher over fixed and reported an overall decrease in joint pain by 30%.
