Do You Remember Where You Were 16 Years Ago?
It’s hard to forget the moment I found out about the 9/11 incident. I was on days off and had stayed at a friends place overnight because of over-indulging the night before. I woke up to every news station showing the first tower attack had just happened, and then feeling glued to the screen as the rest of the days events unfolded. It was during that day that I one of very few moments, where everything felt surreal; I questioned if I wasn’t dreaming, if I was really awake.
In 1999 my grandfather died when I was 20, my grandmother in 2000, 9/11 in 2001 and my father in 2002 . I learned that a young age that loss was something that can change you, both for the good and the bad. In those years I believe I matured significantly, and I made sure I didn’t let those experiences keep me down. Personal growth can only happen when you have both the good and the bad, and at that time in my life there were a lot of negatives. However, life went on.
I guess what I’m getting at is that it’s important to reflect on the past once in a while to see who you are. Reflection helps you look forward to who you want to be and how you want to live your life. Nothing is for certain, but retrospect will useful to shape the things that are yet to come.
I started donating blood in my early 20’s as I found it was something that I knew I could easily contribute and help someone directly and immensely. Blood isn’t the only thing that you can give. Blood, organ and tissue donations are in demand, and sadly the number of people taking the steps to become a donor has decreased.
